Starting Community Relations work
Good Practice in Community Relations Work in Northern IrelandThere are many different reasons for getting engaged in community relations work. However modest the idea, it can be worth developing. Good and necessary work can be done within mixed groups formed for the purpose, or between single-side groups coming together, or within long-established organisations which want to look at their internal relationships. We have a choice between different types of direct action. Good community relations can also grow as a spin-off from local development work.
Whatever is being achieved, there is always the possibility of a further step forward. It is valuable to take the risks of deepening dialogue with one another, and bringing to the surface the "difficult" issues.
The following good practice materials are taken from John Lampen's, now out-of-print book, Building the Peace, commissioned by the Council in 1993 to illustrate the richness and variety of community relations work in Northern Ireland and to provide 'nuggets of wisdom' to individuals and groups interested in getting involved in similar work. Written during 1993-94 the book reflects work undertaken before the IRA ceasefire of 1994. However, many of the issues and problems the book seeks to address still remain highly relevant. The advice remains extremely useful for individuals and groups about to engage in community relations work.
