Community Relations Week 2008
Last year devolution placed local politicians in charge of Government in Northern Ireland and parties who were traditional enemies agreed to work together. This has been a huge advance and is a real opportunity for progess towards a peaceful and shared society. The agreed Programme for Government speaks of A Better, Shared Future.
A shared future means nothing, however, if it is merely symbolic and does not lead to real change on the ground. Conflict, akin to apartheid at times, is still structured into the fabric of Northern Ireland and real change means re-thinking our approach to big issues such as education, policing, parading and culture, housing, regeneration and the whole prosperity and investment agenda. We also have the additional challenge of including new minority ethnic communities. For change towards a shared society, rather than a society of enemies, we need continued leadership, a serious plan and actions by all departments of Government.
Community Relations Week is part of a commitment to the long haul and the hard core of peace-building. Across Northern Ireland hundreds of people will be participating in events, organised by public, voluntary and community organisations, which showcase real change, engage local people in opportunities to take small and large steps and address issues which go to the most difficult issues still remaining. This is work in progress. The real prize is still ahead of us.
